Re:Model: Bathroom Part 1 (demo)

doesn't my husband look cute?

We called in some help for the first couple weekends of our bathroom project. My mom and dad came up to help with the demo which was greatly appreciated. My dad and Jeremy got right to work, while my mom gave me moral support and got me out of the house so I wouldn't worry about the destruction. The demo went a lot faster than anticipated. My biggest worry about this project was losing our toilet. Fortunately, we were able to move the toilet in and out with relative ease throughout the project. My dad also helped us rig a functioning shower over the exposed boards with a plastic surround. Besides excessive dust and B.O., the destruction was a very positive experience!

Accomplishments during weekend 1:
-Tore out all of the tile and plaster off the walls
-Tore out the ceiling
-Installed a vent in the ceiling
-Moved/added electrical outlets

Re:Model: Bathroom Before

Today starts a series of posts taking you through our current bathroom remodel. I have mentioned this upcoming project several times in fearful anticipation because our house only has one bathroom. But, as you can see from these pictures, it had to happen. Even though aesthetically it is lacking, the main concern was our shower leaking into the basement. That was what forced us into DIY bathroom renovation.

Before, our bathroom had blue and gray basketweave tile. I am normally a huge fan of trying to preserve the original character of older homes, but this tile had to go. It was in horrible shape and the blue and gray combined with the seafoam green wall tile was less than appealing. In the shower, the tile was cracked and chipped and the moisture was causing our plaster walls and ceiling to crack and fall off.

So here is the outline of the project:
-Tear out old tile, plaster and ceiling
-Install a fan in the ceiling to help with the moisture problem
-Retile the floor over the existing tile
-Retile the shower up to the ceiling
-Drywall the entire bathroom
-Install a new vanity made from an antique cabinet
-Paint and add new trim

The only things we are keeping are the bathtub (which we are planning on getting reglazed at some point) and the toilet (new when we bought the house).

We are doing this remodel on a budget and will try to do as much as possible by ourselves. Updates on our successes and failures soon to follow!

Craigslist Find: Printer's Cabinet

I am always on the lookout for a piece like this. The problem is, they are usually very expensive. This one isn't bad in comparison, but still not in the budget. My birthday is coming up...
